The Brad Jesness FAQ - Updated 03/19/03

2) What is BJ Posting About, Anyway?

(a) BJ has a couple of issues that pertain to professional psychology. Some of the issues are
serious ones that are worthy of professional discussion. As noted by many, BJ is not capable of
civil discourse or professional discussion. BJ posts long, often abusive attacks on professional
therapists and professional psychology.

(b) BJ has also accumulated thousands upon thousands of posts attacking individuals. He seems
obsessed with Dr. Leslie Packer, Dr. Dan Rogers, and Peter Hood in particular, although he has
gone through periods where he has obsessively attacked Dr. Nancy Alvarado, Dr. Mark Morin, Dr. John
Price, psychology students who criticized, and the entire American Psychological Association. He
has also attacked the APA President Dr. Martin Seligman and appears to have forged posts from the
APA announcing that Dr. Seligman was expected to resign at that year's APA convention BJ has denied
being the author of any of the APA forgeries.

(c) BJ declared that he is the head of an advocacy organization. Originally named "BRAD" (Bad Rap
for therapists And Deserved,) he changed the name to "Client Advocates." It is not incorporated,
has no office or published address, and no known or publicly named members other than BJ. It has no
actual clients and is often referred to as "Client Avocados" in sci.psychology.psychotherapy. In order
to give himself some sorely needed credibility, BJ once posted as "Vic," claiming that Client
Advocates had possibly saved him from suicide.

(d) BJ attempted to plagiarize Dr. Packer by claiming a medical term for children suffering from
Tourette Syndrome. BJ posted his "idea" in alt.support.tourette for multiple reasons,

1. To harass Dr. Packer.
2. To fake his credentials, experience and knowledge.
3. To insult parents of children with TS by suggesting it is just "poor parenting."

Perhaps this should be included in "The nasty side of BJ" seeing as how BJ was probably more
interested in some type of response from Dr. Packer more than the respect of those who would like to
claim are his peers.

(e) BJ has frequently claimed that ALL of the major points in his position paper on his website have
been supported by some respected professionals in psychology. He has repeatedly named them in an
attempt to impress others in threads such as "Ivey says "Listen to BJ." All of the professionals he
has named have stated that they do NOT support him and/or ALL his major points.

Note - BJ's website may be 404 as he lost several pages over his spamming of them.

        (i) Robyn Dawes stated that he had consulted with an attorney to see if he could sue BJ
for BJ's misrepresentation of the extent of his support.

(ii) BJ also claimed the support of a "DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR" and "clinical psychologist"
named Paul Barrett from the UK. Dr. Barrett is neither a professor nor a clinical psychologist
and is not responsible for BJ's misrepresentation of his credentials. Dr. Barrett has said that
he agrees with some of BJ's major points (as does Dawes,) but disagreed with his personal
        characterizations and ad homonym attacks.

(iii) Another 'name' in psychology BJ has claimed supports him is Paul Meehl, and he started
a thread in SPP claiming this. A friend of Meehl's, William M. Grove, who is also Assoc.
Prof, Clinical Science & Psychopathology Research Program, at the Dept. of Psychology, U of
Minnesota, corrected this impression. In the face of the refutation in this article BJ claimed
that Dr. Grove was not privy to the information that he is and continued to claim that he values
Meehl's support not found in the archives. In light of BJ's statements, it is instructive to read
what Dr. Meehl actually wrote, since it is clear that he never read BJ's lengthy website and
declined to comment much on what he did read of BJ's ideas. Since BJ himself published
Meehl's comments, one can only wonder what BJ considers "support."

(f) In the face of strong criticism of his web site in terms of its contents and style and when
appeals to authorities failed to convince a skeptical readership, BJ again resorted to sock puppetry.
Posting as "PsycProf," he praised his own paper. Unfortunately for BJ, the learned "professor" stated:

I saw the following post from a BJ on a mailing list.
I checked these sites out and, as a professor of psychology,
I hardily recommend them to my students and to all interested
                     in clinical psychology.

The "hardily" as well as other signs and symbols had SPP "regulars" rolling in the aisles, as did
BJ's subsequent attempts to claim that the word "hardily" was perfectly appropriate in the sentence.
